Imani-Ife Collins Has Her Sights Set on an International Career

Imani-Ife is recognized by the Opportunity Rising Foundation with the highest honor – the Chair of the Board Award. Her stellar academic track record at Ray Braswell High School in Denton, Texas helped her earn the largest college scholarship awarded this year.

Imani-Ife is currently a freshman at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts where she is pursuing a double major in political science and economics, as well as a certificate in international relations. Inspired by her study abroad experiences in South Korea, Imani-Ife has her sights set on a career in the diplomatic/foreign service field.

She chose Amherst College because of its smaller, community feel where professors know students by name and class sizes are smaller so instruction can be personalized. She shares that her professors are so caring and genuine in wanting everyone to succeed. Getting settled in in a new town, for her first time at college, she realizes how her time studying abroad has helped her adapt to a new environment with confidence and an open mind.

“One of the milestones that has really shaped who I am today is my time abroad, studying in Korea – first in Gwangju and then in Seoul. I lived and studied there for nine months on a scholarship from the Department of State and navigating a new country with a totally different language and culture was challenging. I learned a lot about myself during that time – that I have perseverance, determination, and that my calm disposition is helpful when navigating any circumstance.

I really like learning about history and geography – why are certain countries independent and others not? I am also a language nerd. I really enjoy learning new languages and about different cultures. During my time in Korea, I met so many wonderful people who helped me see the world through a new perspective. This experience has really shaped who I am today and the career I am pursuing in international relations.”

During high school Imani-Ife was an English tutor for a Ukrainian student, and she learned a lot about the Ukraine, what growing up is like there, and she in turn loved sharing about American culture and school with her student. She also has a curiosity to learn and a love of books. During high school she volunteered at her local library, helping to keep the library organized and developing programming for visitors.

Like many students, Imani-Ife experienced her freshman and sophomore year of high school virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Having experienced this challenging dynamic has helped her realize she can make any situation work. She started high school in-person during her junior year of high school when she had to change her learning style and socialize with her peers in a large, busy environment, which was a big adjustment for many. Her adaptability is an asset while she adapts to college and pursues a career that will take her to different countries, cultures, and people.

She expresses gratitude to DHA and the foundation leadership for their support with her journey.

“I would like to give the biggest thank you to those who are involved with the foundation! It’s really meaningful to be recognized for your achievement and also receive financial assistance for school. These types of scholarships can be make or break for some students. Keep doing what you do, it is changing lives out there.

My advice to future Opportunity Rising scholars is to definitely apply! Also, learn to navigate through any professional or educational environment as if you have a place in it. Own your place whatever environment you are in – you are there for a reason. Don’t be too shy to say anything or feel out of place. Wherever you are you are meant to be there, and you have the opportunity to leave your mark!”
